Echocardiography
Overview
Echocardiography is an ultrasound-based test that visualizes the heart’s structure and function in real-time. It helps evaluate how well your heart is pumping and how the valves are working.
Types
- Transthoracic Echocardiography (TTE): Standard echo done through the chest wall.
- Transesophageal Echocardiography (TEE): Done via the esophagus for detailed images.
- Stress Echo: Combined with physical or medication-induced stress to evaluate function.
- Doppler Echocardiography: Assesses blood flow through the heart.
Why It's Done
- To detect heart valve diseases
- To assess heart muscle performance (e.g., in heart failure)
- To monitor congenital heart conditions
- To detect fluid around the heart or blood clots
Why It's Done
Echocardiography is very safe. Standard TTE has no known risks. TEE may involve mild discomfort or a sore throat afterward, but complications are rare.
